Overview
Mandatory Building Codes adopted for current use in South Carolina and which must be enforced by all municipalities and counties, effective January 1, 2020, include the:
- 2018 International Building Code with SC modifications. S.C. Code Ann. Regs 8-800 (amendments).
- 2018 International Residential Code with SC modifications. S.C. Code Ann. Regs 8-1200 (amendments).

The South Carolina Building Codes Council adopted the 2018 IRC statewide with amendments, including Appendices H, J, and Q. S.C. Code Ann. Regs., Chapter 8, 8-1200.
Existing Buildings
Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of
construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

Commercial Building Code
Darlington County adopted the 2018 IBC, statewide. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

Existing Buildings
The South Carolina Building Codes Council does not include the administrative sections of Chapter 34; Chapter 34 refers to §101.4.7 of the 2018 South Carolina Existing Building Code.
