Belle Fourche, SD, adopted the 2009 IBC and IRC with amendments. Belle Fourche, SD, Municipal Code § 15.04.020 (adopt and amend IBC and IRC).

Belle Fourch, SD, adopted Appendix H of the 2009 IRC. Some key amendments set forth in § 15.04.020 of Belle Fourch, SD, Municipal Code are as follows:

IRC Chapter 3 Section R311.5.3.1 Riser Height is hereby amended to read as follows: The maximum riser height shall be 8 inches. The riser shall be measured vertically between leading edges of the adjacent treads. The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs shall not exceed the smallest by more than 3/8 inch.

IRC Chapter 3, Section 311.5.3.2 Tread Depth is hereby amended to read as follows: The minimum tread depth shall be 9 inches.

Exception for Exterior Siding and Roofing Finishes for Residential Buildings and Accessory Buildings. No galvanized or unpainted aluminum siding or roof finish shall be allowed in residential areas.

Existing Buildings

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

In the amendments, it appears that Belle Fourche has NOT adopted Appendix J as part of the code. Belle Fourche, SD, Municipal Code § 15.04.020. Appendix J provides guidance on existing buildings.
