The course “Catastrophe Property Claims Handling” is designed to enhance the
student’s knowledge, understanding, and professional competence in the legal and
claims handling aspects of the post catastrophe environment. The module is
presented by Mike Barrett with the independent adjusting firm Engle, Martin and
Associates, and Dan Sullivan, an attorney with the law firm of Robinson and Cole.
The presenters begin by highlighting the differences between catastrophe
claims and others. Next, the presenters share their insights about some specific
types of claims often encountered during catastrophes and offer tips when
adjusting these claims. The presenters then speak about the use of experts in
the catastrophe context, including good practices to use when creating task
assignments. The presenters further discuss abnormal bad faith and its relation
to catastrophe claims handling. Next, the presenters cover the rules of estoppel
and subrogation potential. Finally, the presenters emphasize safety and list
many of the common safety hazards inherent in these types of claims.
After
completing the course, the viewer should be able to…
explain how
catastrophe claims handling differs from other claims; recognize flood lines and
distinguish them from ground water intrusion; identify strategies to document
claims which present an issue of wind-driven rain; identify the experts most
commonly used during catastrophe claims handling; determine which experts are
most likely to be approved in court; define abnormal bad faith and procedural bad
faith; perform effective inspections with proper documentation of the loss site;
define estoppel and apply it to claims handling scenarios; recognize situations
that might provide subrogation potential against a mitigation subcontractor; and
identify the most common safety hazards accompanying catastrophe claims.
The course is designed for practitioners and insurance professionals working
in the area of property insurance claims handling.
