The “Business Interruption: Manufacturing Losses” course is designed to help adjusters understand the business interruption assessment for manufacturing losses, including initial loss assessment and information gathering, coverage issues, measurement issues, and how to prepare for final settlement meetings. The module is presented by George D. Uhl, CPA, Matson, Driscoll & Damico, and Nicholas Cimino, Engle Martin & Associates.

This course begins with a discussion of preliminary information gathering regarding the insured and their business operations. Next, the course outlines a detailed review of coverages available. The course summarizes the documentation that is needed to measure the time element loss and the importance of sales, production, and inventory records. It emphasizes the value of regular and open communication, and the discussions that should be held on an ongoing basis. Lastly, it discusses what the reporting should look like, and how to prepare and work through the settlement process.

After completing the course, the attendee will be able to understand how to conduct preliminary research, assemble the adjustment team, and conduct the initial meeting with the insured; discuss a detailed review of coverages available; outline the documentation that is needed to measure the time element loss and why the information is important; identify the nature of the loss to help determine the depth of accounting data that is needed and available; recognize the measurement steps including reviewing sales, production and inventory, determining a forecasting methodology and comparing it to the actual results, and reviewing expenses and determining non-continuing amounts; understand the value of regular and open communication; and describe what the reporting should look like, and how to prepare and work through the settlement process.

The course is designed for insurance professionals working in the area of property adjusting.
