The The “Building Codes 101: Introduction to Building Codes” course teaches insurance professionals about the basics of building codes. Building codes frequently play an important role in property loss adjustments and for personal injury causes of action. In this course, PLRB’s Building Code Department staff provide lessons on how building codes function, how they are developed, and how to research code-related questions. The course is broken down into six sections: the Introduction, Model Codes, State vs. Local Jurisdiction, Adoption, Pinpointing Content, and PLRB’s Code Database. Collectively, the course provides the audience with a practical understanding of how building codes are implemented across the country with an emphasis on common code provisions and topics that insurance professionals are likely to encounter.
This course is the recommended prerequisite to all subsequent Building Code modules including PLRB’s Buildings Codes 201 and 301.
After completing this course, the student will be able to explain the relevance of codes to property and liability claims; describe and apply code upgrade coverage; explain how codes can create counts in a personal injury complaint; identify situations where codes can create defenses to liability; identify the major model code organizations; explain the benefits of model codes vs. proprietary codes; describe how the model code development works; describe the interplay between states and local building codes; list the different ways that states and other local jurisdictions adopt codes; locate building code adoption language in city and state administrative codes; search and locate specific provisions in building codes; utilize public access online code sources for research purposes; describe the significance of local amendments to model code regulations; and locate relevant codes using web resources including the ICC website and PLRB’s building code database. The course is designed for insurance professionals working in the area of property and casualty adjusting.
