The “Art & Heirloom Claims: After the Alarm” course teaches insurance professionals what to expect in claims involving damage to art, how to approach these claims and what pieces can be repaired. The module is presented by Heather Becker, CEO of The Conservation Center.

The course begins by identifying the various types of mediums of art, including murals, books, canvas, works of art on paper, frames, sculptures, and more. These mediums are discussed in the context of how they are typically damaged and how they can be repaired. The course explores the different specialists an adjuster may need to work with in such a claim, and covers the various insurance policies that outline what property is covered. The instructor then reviews the procedures a conservator will take in handling a collection in an emergency, and how to identify pre-loss damage versus damage caused by the loss. Adjusters are taught what information to collect upon arriving on scene, and how owners can mitigate losses before and after they happen. The course then goes through real-life case studies.

After completing the course, the attendee will be able to determine conservation options for damaged pieces; define the most common formats and media used by artists; enumerate the various insurance policies that will outline what property is covered; understand the recommended procedures for a conservator handling their client’s collection in an emergency; identify what damage to an artwork was a direct result of the loss, as opposed to pre-existing damages; provide appropriate information to specialists during the claims process; discuss how to determine the value of a work and contact the appropriate specialists; explain how damage could have been preemptively minimized for art and heirloom damages; prepare items for transport to a specialist following an emergency; and create a plan that includes prevention as a roadmap to recovery. The course is designed for insurance professionals working in the area of property adjusting.
