This course “Carpet Basics: Repair or Replace” is designed to enhance an adjuster’s knowledge and understanding of the repair or replacement of carpet in residential and commercial property losses. Carpeting is one of the most common types of flooring and is frequently included in property loss adjustments. The module is presented by Certified Carpet inspector, Timothy Nenoff, General Manager at Performer’s Flooring America, a flooring retail and installation business located in Bloomingdale, Illinois.

This course begins with an overview of the construction of broadloom or rolled carpet, including the different types of carpet styles, fibers and backing materials, as well as other factors that may impact the performance and value of broadloom carpet. The course contains numerous pictures to illustrate these concepts. The presenter then discusses the importance of carpet cushion, the four main types of carpet cushions and how broadloom carpet and cushion are commonly installed on flat surfaces and stairs. Next, the presenter provides pointers for inspecting carpet damaged by smoke and water and examines general installation costs. Having reviewed the basics of carpet construction and installation, the presenter explains how adjusters can determine if damaged carpet needs to be repaired or replaced. In the final two sections, the presenter discusses how to calculate the quantity of broadloom carpet needed and the construction and installation of modular carpet tiles, which are commonly found in commercial properties.

After completing the course, the viewer should be able to …
