AFTON – Building contractors are now required to buy permits and follow the 2009 International Building Codes in Afton.

Based on recommendations by newly hired Afton Building Inspector Travis Jones Monday, the Afton Board of Trustees approved the building permit fees and put into place a resolution to require building contractor inspections.

Jones' duties for Afton, on his off hours as building inspector for the City of Miami, are to ensure any new construction meets local and national building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations and contract specifications.

In addition, the trustees also adopted the 2011 edition of the National Electric Code and the 2009 International Plumbing, International Fuel Gas, International Residential and International Mechanical Codes.

Jones said these codes are all mandated by the State of Oklahoma and the Uniform Building Code Commission. All municipalities are now supposed to be on the same code. However, the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission is currently reviewing the 2015 building codes.
