Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Building Codes

Overview

The State of Oklahoma adopted and enforces the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code. The building code is strictly mandated throughout the state; however, local jurisdictions may adopt additional more stringent provisions so long as they are not in conflict with the state code.

The City of Oklahoma City, OK, has adopted the state code (2015 ICC Codes), effective 09/24/19.

Residential Building Code

Oklahoma adopted a statewide mandatory residential code that will control; however, local governments are free to make laws more strict (with some limitations).See PLRB, Oklahoma Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

Oklahoma City adopted the 2015 IRC, statewide. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

The City has adopted the 2015 IRC, including Appendices E, G, H, O and T, with amendments. 

 

Existing Buildings

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.

The City has not adopted Appendix J of the 2015 IRC. Refer to the adopted 1978 BOCA Basic Property Maintenance Code, with amendments.

Commercial Building Code

Oklahoma City adopted the 2015 IBC, statewide. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.
